Chapter Ten

“I love a baseball game on a sunny afternoon,” Savannah said. “Thank you for inviting us.”

Rebecca was holding Amanda, who was always fascinated by her curly hair. She would periodically catch the baby girl’s eyes and make a face, and that would make Amanda laugh and smile. But most of the time, her eyes were on Carson, who was standing on the pitcher’s mound. He looked so mature and handsome in his new uniform. After Shane’s intensive coaching, Carson easily made a team sponsored by a local feed store as starting pitcher. She’d never seen her son this excited about anything, and it made her feel grateful to Shane for the interest he had taken in Carson and the time he spent coaching him. This was the first game of the season, and even though it was just a practice game, it was important to her son.

“I’m glad you could come,” she said. “I’m so happy that he made the team. He’s had a harder time adjusting than Caleb.”

She had been keeping a watchful eye on her youngest son, who was using a gap in the chain-link fence around the ball field to take pictures of his brother pitching.

“I just don’t know how I’m going to juggle work, little league and having them home for the summer. Back home, I had a pretty long list of childcare options.”

“You could always bring them out to the ranch,” Savannah suggested after a minute.

Rebecca looked at her friend, surprised.

“There’s plenty for them to do out there and plenty of people to watch them,” her friend explained. “Bruce would be happy to put them to work.”

It was an unexpected solution to her problem; one that seemed worth at least exploring.

“Why don’t you bring the boys to Sunday brunch after church—the Brands have a big brunch every Sunday—it’s a tradition. That way, you could meet everyone, see that ranch.”

She accepted the invitation. It might not be a permanent solution to the problem, but it might be a backup plan if she couldn’t find the right childcare solution for the boys during the summer.

“And,” Savannah added, “if you could manage to pull off a miracle and drag Shane along with you, the family would probably make you an honorary Brand on the spot.”

Rebecca laughed. “I don’t have that kind of influence over Shane.”

Savannah had a look on her face that let Rebecca know that her friend didn’t really believe that statement.

“I think you have more than you think,” the young mother said. “I mean, look at him. He’s lost weight, he’s in better shape—you’ve managed to get him to tame that out-of-control beard. He actually looks healthy again.” Her friend nodded her head toward where Shane was standing near the dugout. Carson’s team needed an assistant coach and Shane had agreed to take on the job, which had made her eldest son’s baseball triumph that much sweeter for him.

It was true that Rebecca had managed to convince Shane to let her trim down his beard and shorten his hair again.
